Test: Annoying bug in Windows 11: Why is the desktop turning black?

Some Windows 11 users have started to encounter an unfamiliar desktop when they turn on their computers. Microsoft's August preview update included a bug that caused desktop backgrounds to turn completely black in some versions of the operating system.

The problem affects Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The root of the error is that the operating system cannot correctly load the configuration data for personalization settings. When the system cannot read the necessary values, it displays the desktop with a black background by default.

The problem doesn't only affect monochrome desktop backgrounds. Slideshow mode and high-contrast themes are also affected. More importantly, manually changing the settings doesn't fix the issue. The changes aren't properly loaded by the operating system and therefore don't take effect. As a result, even if the user tries to restore their preferred desktop appearance, the system reverts to a black background.

The fact that the problem arose after an optional preview update has reignited discussions about stability issues that updates can cause in Windows 11.

Microsoft is working on a fix

Microsoft confirmed the issue in its own problem reporting panel. The company stated that its technical team is working to resolve the problem and that a solution is expected to be included in a future Windows update.

For now, there's nothing to do but wait for the official fix to be released. Repeatedly changing desktop settings doesn't provide a permanent solution because the configuration data isn't being loaded.
