The fundamental difference lies in where these two methods are used. Passwords provide access to server-based accounts, so copies can be stored on remote servers. PIN codes, on the other hand, are stored locally, directly linked to a specific device or system. This makes it more difficult for an attacker to remotely access another account using the same method if the PIN is compromised.Why is PIN code so important for device security?The fact that PIN codes are not sent over the internet provides a significant security advantage. Therefore, it is not possible for the PIN to be intercepted during a network connection via man-in-the-middle (MiTM) attacks.Modern devices also utilize hardware-based security mechanisms to protect PINs. The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) in Windows, the Secure Enclave in Apple devices, and the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) in Android systems are all responsible for protecting PIN codes.The use of PINs is not limited to this. Today, PIN codes are also used to unlock passkeys, a passwordless authentication method used instead of passwords.Watch out for these mistakes when choosing a PIN.Similarly, you should avoid consecutive numbers like "1-2-3-4-5-6" and combinations like "2-5-8-0" that form a distinctive pattern on the keypad. Instead of repeating numbers, it is recommended to use a PIN of at least six digits that is difficult to guess.Another option for Windows users is to increase the default four-digit PIN limit using group policy settings. This makes the device's PIN-based protection stronger.In crowded environments, the possibility of others seeing your PIN should also be considered.
