In an era where paid streaming services have become a part of daily life, VLC Media Player, which has been used for free for years, has passed a significant milestone. Developed by VideoLAN, the application has reached a total of 7 billion downloads across all platforms.

This figure also reveals how wide a user base VLC has reached, without being tied to a specific operating system or device. VideoLAN President and lead developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf announced that the 7 billion download mark has been reached. VLC's previous major milestone was in January 2025. At that time, the media player reached a total of 6 billion downloads, and in approximately 18 months, it gained another 1 billion new downloads.

VLC is also expanding to new platforms
VideoLAN continues to expand the reach of its media player. The development team announced that VLC has been successfully adapted to the Amazon Vega OS operating system, which is designed for televisions. One of VLC's main goals is to work on as many different platforms and media formats as possible. While the team continues its work on new systems in this direction, the development of the long-awaited VLC 4 version is also ongoing.
In addition to work on the new version, various features are also being focused on the artificial intelligence side. Last year, VideoLAN introduced automatic translation and subtitling features that work with local AI models. Work is still ongoing to determine how and when these features will be included in the final VLC 4 release. Which new features will be available to users in the new version of VLC remains part of the development process for now.
